I’m Passionate About Freelance Writing!

I’m an international copywriter based in the UK, part of the Hire a Writer team with clients in Europe and elsewhere in the world. My work has appeared online and in print. You could of read a magazine article and not realised I was the ghost writer. You might of booked a holiday online after reading my copy. Perhaps I wrote the instruction manual which you followed when installing software. Diversity and experience has kept the work flowing my way for years.

The other day whilst my hair was being tamed by a hairdresser, we discussed copywriting. The hairdresser was giggling (probably not a good idea for a hairdresser), whilst I divulged I had written numerous articles on ladies shoes from the perspective of a female. She snorted when I exclaimed that should the topic arise in conversation, I now can go toe to toe in a discussion.

I explained that I always immerse myself in a topic and do my homework.

Often torturing those around me for information over breakfast, during lunch or when bumping into them on the street. I seek views from those of different ages and gender. I soak up knowledge and for a time, I am writing as if my client’s product, service is mine.

I find it hard to switch off from my work! I’m always seeking to learn, and I’m always studying and playing with words, as a child often finds different ways to play with a toy.

Sometimes I will visit popular sites and read poor grammar, badly formed paragraphs and find myself left hanging with no forwarding website link, having to resort to digging around a site myself or using a search engine to seek further information.

I question the SEO strategy and think of the missed opportunities!

I often feel magazines articles leave a stone unturned, train tickets need some oomph and wonder why my mortgage statements are so boring! They’ve got my attention and probably would love more referrals and money, so why are they not making the effort whilst they have my attention?

The best piece of copy I recently read was for a steak sauce in America, and I’m a vegetarian living in the UK. The copy was so good, different and well presented, that I want to try this sauce on my veggie burgers in the UK. I had no need for this American steak sauce, but the writing had created a desire to purchase.

That copy had created overseas demand in another market.

When I’m asked to ghost write a magazine article on a complex topic, and via a mixture of conversation, research and experience, I always come up with the goods. I love a challenge, with most of my bread and butter work is about experience, which is definitely what a good writer requires.

I visited the website of a competitor the other day. Not out of fear, but a curiosity to see what they were offering. I’ll be honest all their copy looked ‘dull’ and ‘safe’. There was no fun, no sentences that gave me pause and definitely nothing enticing. Testimonials were splattered Jackson Pollock style across the page. Alas I’m rarely shocked by the output of fellow writers.

Affordable Writing Service

I recently saw someone offering a writing service for a fee which ‘you can afford’. I’m not being rude, but for me this approach can lead to all sorts of headaches, for both client and contractor alike.

It could be the case that both parties agree a price based on what the client can afford, with everyone happy with the outcome. On the flip side, there is a clear danger to both parties in this type of approach.

How can I be certain of this danger? Because I’ve experienced the nightmare of allowing some clients in the past to dictate pricing which is too low for the services Hire a Writer offer. My own fault entirely, and it was a painful lesson.

I now always set a realistic price based upon our criteria, and not what a potential client ‘says’ they can afford. The reality is you often don’t know when someone is being truthful with you, rather than trying to take the advantage.

Even if someone is being honest, but they can’t afford much, you have to ask yourself is it really worth the time and effort?

Hire a Writer is cheap for a high quality UK copywriter service, but it isn’t squeeze me, I can’t afford to buy the biscuits to dunk into my tea cheap. There are overheads and a life outside out of writing to lead.

Unsurprisingly people still contact me trying to dangle a carrot in front of my face, talking of repeat work and later opportunities. This type of negotiating approach is familiar to many, but I’m wise enough to know when to say NO on behalf of the Hire a Writer team.

I think I should revisit this topic in the future, but for now it’s time to have tea and biscuits!

Losing Website Traffic

Today I’m writing about losing website traffic and provide some related tips for improving visitor numbers.

Does this blog post belong on the Hire a Writer website? Definitely, as a writer can play an important role in achieving good website traffic.

Introduction

I’m actually preparing a fantastic in-depth case study on this topic, but until it’s ready I thought a quick blog post on the topic would be a good filler in the meantime!

Sometimes a person has tried their best to use good practices, often trying to employee the right people to help. For some people, search engine ranking and trying to improve site traffic is akin to voodoo! Whilst others put off the work for a ‘rainy day’, but never actually get around to doing it. Some even hope that paying for a service based upon low pricing for quick results, is sufficient.

Did you forget to cover the basics?

I’ve seen people start to play the blame game, which could be a disastrous beginning to what already could be a bumpy road ahead. Often a reduction in visitor numbers is just down to little or no work taking place, wrong actions and / or a disjointed plan lacking focus. It might be that the basics where not being carried out, rather than being the victim to a worthy competitor.

Did you become complacent?

You might have been fortunate, obtaining a decent dollop of traffic in a smaller market, but perhaps times have changed. Some large predators might now be hunting the same turf, in addition to a larger group of competitors chasing the same visitors.

Is your site and SEO outdated?

That rocking website and SEO plan from five years ago that had the traffic flocking to your site, is likely no match for vibrant modern sites adhering to recent good practices, coupled with investment and a strategy with a view to increasing traffic not just in the short-term, but also in the long-term.

It’s not rocket science!

The quality of links, rocking a great responsive theme, branding, social and of course great copywriting amongst many other factors all play an important role. Focusing on just one area, even if it is the writing, is an unwise strategy!

So how can a writer help?

Hiring an experienced SEO writer can help you strengthen your on-site content, but writers can also play a vital role off-site. Obviously content shouldn’t just be about the ‘keywords’ and ‘call to actions’, but also be readable, engaging, strengthen and work with a brand, products and services.

A good online writer needs to understand their writing in relation to search engine optimisation, otherwise it falls short of what others are doing today. Just because someone is a good writer, doesn’t mean they are a good SEO writer.

As a website administrator or owner, you need to understand writing, whilst the content is important, it is just one aspect of maintaining and improving website ranking.

Simple basic actions to take today:

  • Make sure you have a website backup before you proceed with any work.
  • Check to see if you have a road map that consists of sound SEO practices, which is actually being adhered to and implemented.
  • Use services such as Google’s Webmaster Tools to help you identify issues that need fixing.
  • Re-evaluate your strategy, including having frank, but friendly discussions with anyone you work with.

Obviously once you’ve covered the above, there is a lot of additional actions to take, but you need to make sure all work starts with a review, rather than a knee jerk reaction that could prove disastrous.

In the meantime, if you need a good SEO writer, you know who to contact!

Update from the Team

Blimey it has been a while since we last posted here on the Hire a Writer blog!

The enquiries and work flows as per usual. Our consistent quality and output enables us to stay fed, with money leftover on occasion to purchase chocolate biscuits to dunk into our gigantic mugs of tea!

Whilst other writers struggle, our website keeps the enquiries flowing, without us becoming side-tracked by the constant din of ‘punting for work’ via online marketplaces, trying to be heard above the crowd of questionable competitors.

Customer loyalty is the third reason why the Hire a Writer team have been around all these years. We work our socks off, bringing our experience to any project and don’t require micromanagement to help bring textual form to a vision.

We only work repeatedly for decent people who understand that pointless emails, phone calls and video conferencing, adds time, cost and unnecessary distraction. We are presented with a brief, often accompanied by reference material, else go research and ask questions if necessary.

As the saying goes, we’ve been there, done that and got the t-shirt. We are no-nonsense, hard working and good at what we do. The eldest of the team was writing professionally over twenty years ago, and experience does count.

We appreciate that when someone is looking for a writer, they need to find someone to trust, who appreciates how important the work might be, and to treat the assignment in a professional manner.

We never take on a deadline we can’t meet, and if we don’t think the assignment is right for us, we won’t waste your time or ours.

If you require a writer, and the above sounds good to you, please get in touch.
